Miss Universe 2024 Candidates Celebrate Mexican Culture in Style at Gala De Las Catrinas

The Gala de la Catrina, held annually in Mexico, is an event that blends tradition, elegance, and a celebration of life. In 2024, the gala took on even more significance as it hosted the candidates for the Miss Universe competition, creating a vibrant fusion of beauty, culture, and Mexican heritage.

This year’s Gala de la Catrina took place in the heart of Mexico, drawing international attention as the Miss Universe hopefuls showcased their grace and poise while embracing the iconic Mexican celebration of Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead). The event is an important part of Mexico’s cultural landscape, honoring ancestors through colorful altars, elaborate costumes, and artistic expressions, and the Miss Universe candidates took part in this celebration with style.

The highlight of the evening was the contestants’ stunning attire, inspired by the famous "Catrina" figure—an elegant skeleton often depicted in elaborate, vibrant costumes. Each participant was invited to wear a unique Catrina-inspired outfit, combining traditional elements with modern flair. The dresses ranged from intricate, hand-painted designs to extravagant creations featuring sugar skull motifs, floral embellishments, and dramatic makeup.

Beyond the stunning visuals, the Gala de la Catrina also provided an opportunity for the candidates to connect with Mexican culture. Many shared their experiences of learning about Día de los Muertos and how it resonated with them personally. This deepened the cultural exchange and allowed the contestants to gain a better understanding of Mexico’s rich history and the significance of the celebration.

The evening was filled with music, dance, and festivities, as the beauty queens posed for photos, interacted with local dignitaries, and enjoyed the camaraderie of their fellow contestants. It was an unforgettable night of unity, showcasing the power of art and culture to bring people together from around the world.

My favorite Catrinas at the Gala were Philippines ad Egypt because they closely represented the Catrina figure from the huge hat, the skeleton and the make-up.

For Mexico, hosting the Miss Universe 2024 candidates at the Gala de la Catrina was a proud moment, as it underscored the country’s commitment to preserving its cultural traditions while sharing them with a global audience. The event left a lasting impression on everyone involved and provided a beautiful prelude to the upcoming Miss Universe competition.
